Estes Park Whitewater Rafting: Colorado’s Best Kept Adventure
Estes Park is known for its peaceful charm. It’s where elk wander down main streets, mountains frame every coffee shop window, and the pace of life slows just enough to notice the color of the sky. But what if you’re ready to shake things up a little?
Just over an hour outside of town, there’s a wild side to Colorado that most visitors never see. It’s splashy, scenic, and so full of energy it practically pulls you in.
This is whitewater rafting near Estes Park. And with A Wanderlust Adventure, it’s not just another thing to do. It’s the best part of your entire trip.
A Day You’ll Still Be Talking About Next Summer
Let’s set the scene. You wake up in Estes Park, the sun rising behind Longs Peak. Maybe you’ve hiked a trail or two, wandered into a gift shop, or sipped wine with a mountain view. You’ve had a good trip already. But now, you want a memory that feels different. A little louder. A little wilder. Something worth writing home about.
Our whitewater rafting trips take place on the Cache la Poudre River, Colorado’s only federally designated National Wild and Scenic River. This means the scenery is untouched. And the adventure? It’s the real deal.
At A Wanderlust Adventure, we’ve been guiding trips on the Poudre since 1982. That means we know every bend, every boulder, and every way to make the day unforgettable.
Why Rafting Is the Perfect Contrast to Estes Park
Estes Park is beautiful. No one’s arguing that. But it’s a different kind of beautiful. Peaceful. Serene. Romantic, even. And after a couple of days soaking in that serenity, you might find yourself craving a jolt of adrenaline.
That’s where we come in.
The drive from Estes Park to our launch site near Fort Collins is about 80 minutes. But it’s no ordinary drive. You’ll cruise through Big Thompson Canyon, past massive rock walls and pine-covered slopes. You might spot deer. Maybe even a moose. The road opens up around every turn and by the time you arrive, you’ll already feel more alive.
This is the Colorado most people don’t find on their own. That’s part of the magic.
Two Trips, One Incredible River
We offer two main trips designed to match your pace, your comfort level, and your craving for adventure.
Taste of Whitewater: Scenic and Splashy
Perfect for families, first-timers, and anyone who’s a little unsure about rafting. You’ll float through a gorgeous canyon, paddle through fun Class II and III rapids, and still have time to enjoy the views. This is a great way to test the waters and fall in love with the river.
You’ll get wet. You’ll laugh. You might even shout with joy. But you won’t feel overwhelmed. This trip is about fun, connection, and seeing Colorado from a whole new angle.
Minimum age: 7 Trip time: Half day
Blast of Whitewater: High Energy, High Reward
This one’s for the bold. The daring. The ready-for-anything types. You’ll charge through 12 miles of Class III and IV rapids with names like Pinball, Roller Coaster, and Pine View Falls. The canyon gets tighter, the water faster, and the ride more exhilarating with every stretch.
No experience is necessary, but you should be in good health and ready to paddle hard. This trip is fast, physical, and incredibly fun.
Minimum age: 14 Trip time: Half day

Why A Wanderlust Adventure?
We’ve been rafting for over 40 years. We’re permitted through Roosevelt National Forest, members of the Colorado River Outfitters Association and America Outdoors.
But more than that, we care. We care about the river. We care about our guests. And we care about giving you a day that feels bigger than the sum of its parts.
Our guides aren’t just trained. They’re storytellers. They’re jokers. They’re the kind of people you want to share a raft with.
Frequently Asked Questions: Estes Park Whitewater Rafting
How far is the rafting trip from Estes Park?
Our meeting area is about 80 minutes from Estes Park. While you’ll drive to our meeting point near Fort Collins, the journey is part of the experience. You’ll cruise through Big Thompson Canyon, past rock walls, river bends, and forested ridgelines. It’s the kind of scenic route that makes you reach for your camera again and again. By the time you pull into our lot, the adventure is already underway.
Do I need to know how to swim?
Swimming experience is helpful but not required. Everyone wears a life jacket and our guides are trained in swiftwater rescue. If you’re nervous about the water, let us know when you book. We’ll walk you through it and match you with a trip that suits your comfort level.
What’s the difference between the Taste of Whitewater and Blast of Whitewater trips?
Great question. Think of Taste of Whitewater as your intro to rafting. It’s fun, scenic, and perfect for first-timers, families, or anyone who wants splashy thrills without intense advanced rapids. Blast of Whitewater is the next step up. More rapids, more energy, and a faster pace. You’ll tackle Class III and IV rapids and come out of it soaked, smiling, and full of stories.
What class are the rapids on these trips?
Taste of Whitewater runs through Class II and III rapids—enough to keep things exciting but still beginner-friendly. Blast of Whitewater cranks it up with Class III and IV rapids that offer a more intense, athletic ride. Class ratings range from I (calm water) to VI (extreme and nearly un-runnable), so our trips sit comfortably in the middle.
What should I wear?
Dress like you’re going to get wet, because you will. Swimsuits, athletic shorts, and synthetic shirts work best. Avoid cotton, it stays wet and gets chilly. Secure footwear is a must. Think water shoes or old sneakers with a heel strap. No flip-flops. No bare feet. Bring dry clothes and a towel for after the trip. We’ve got places for you to change.
Will I be cold?
It depends on the season. Early trips in May and June can be chilly, but we provide wetsuit and bootie rentals and the free use of a splash jacket. These keep you warm and comfortable throughout the ride. By July and August, the air and water warm up and you’ll probably welcome the splash.
Is rafting available year-round?
Our rafting season typically runs from mid-May through Labor Day. The Cache la Poudre River is snowmelt-fed, meaning our best flows happen in early summer. If you’re visiting Estes Park between Memorial Day and early August, you’re in the sweet spot for whitewater. We recommend booking in advance, especially in late June and July, when demand is highest.
How long does each trip last?
Each trip takes about 3 to 4 hours total, including check-in, transportation to the river, safety instruction, and the rafting time itself. On the water, you’ll paddle for roughly 2 to 3 hours, depending on conditions. It’s a half-day adventure with a full-day payoff.
Is there a weight limit?
Our recommended weight limit is 275 lbs. and all guests must be able to fit safely into our life jackets and sit comfortably in the raft. If you have concerns, give us a call before booking.
Can kids go rafting?
Absolutely. Kids as young as 7 can join our Taste of Whitewater trip, as long as they weigh at least 50 pounds. It’s a great introduction to rafting for children, with plenty of paddling, laughter, and thrills. Blast of Whitewater has a minimum age of 14, as it’s a more physically demanding trip.
Can I bring a phone or camera on the raft?
No. We do not recommend bringing your phone or camera on our trips. We have professional photographers who capture each trip from the riverbanks. Their shots are sharp, action-packed, and available for purchase after the ride.
Is food or drink included?
We don’t serve meals during trips, but you’re welcome to bring water and snacks for before or after. If you’re hungry afterward, swing by Vern’s Place, our local restaurant partner with amazing comfort food, outdoor seating, and cinnamon rolls that have earned a reputation of their own.
Do you offer group trips?
Yes. We regularly host school groups, wedding parties, team-building events, and reunions. Let us know how many people are in your group, and we’ll help coordinate the right number of rafts and guides. It’s a great way to bond, celebrate, and create something to talk about for years.
How do I book a trip?
You can book online through our website or call us directly. We’ll walk you through availability, trip types, and what to expect. Booking ahead is recommended, especially during peak summer months.
What’s your cancellation policy?
All Reservations of Trips and services are instant and Non-Refundable within 7 days of your rafting date. All sales inside of 7 days are final. A refund will be given, less 10% reservation fee, if notice is given 7 days prior to the date of the trip. Our Cache La Poudre white water rafting trips launch from Fort Collins and run in all weather conditions unless AWA cancels for extreme water/weather/safety reasons. If AWA cancels a trip, a 100% refund will be given. If a group is late for any reason and the bus has already left, there will be no refund.
Are your guides certified?
Yes. Every guide at A Wanderlust Adventure is certified in CPR and swiftwater rescue. But it goes beyond the certifications. We hire guides who are calm under pressure, enthusiastic about the outdoors, and skilled at turning first-time paddlers into lifelong river fans.
What makes rafting with A Wanderlust Adventure different?
We’ve been doing this for more than four decades. We know this river like the back of our hand. But more importantly, we care deeply about the people who raft with us. We’re not a giant operation cramming in as many people as possible. We keep our guides dialed in, and our focus on what really matters, giving you a day worth remembering.
